some home truths... unless you have some clever 'edge', you'll never make money betting or laying. even on betting exchanges - because the odds are worked out so that you don't win! most people think that bookmakers make odds based on the likelihood of winning but the truth is, they make the odds tempting enough for you to bet and just bad enough for them to win in the long run. ok, so what about betting exchanges? well, most of the time the odds are a little better but you have to pay 5% on your winnings and, worse if you are laying, those 'better odds' suddenly become worse odds. it's always a zero sum game minus 5%. if you use an ordinary bookmaker the odds are about 20% against you... guide to laying horses here's a brief introduction... most people whove had anything to do with betting on horses will have heard of laying horses often expressed as betting on horses to lose, usually with claims to becoming a bookmaker together with the clich whos ever heard of a poor bookmaker?. this is not entirely accurate as many who have tried laying horses have found out to their cost! the problem is that laying only pays even odds, whatever the horses odds but you have to pay those odds out should the beast win. the term laying really means you are accepting bets from regular punters backing the horse. for example, you lay dawson creek for 10 and its odds are 8.00. that means that youve accepted to cover a 10 bet on the horse. if it loses, you keep the bettors 10 and if it wins, you have to pay him back his 10 plus 70 of your own money (the 8.00 odds includes the stake). you may do this six times in a row and each time the horse loses. youve pocketed 60 and think youre on to a good thing! the next time, as the odds would indicate, it wins and you now have to pay out 70 of your own money taking all your previous profit plus 10 of your own money. imagine if your laying career started with a 20.00 horse and it romped home fist. thats an immediate loss of 190. i hope you are beginning to see why all those claims of a 90% success rate laying horses are not so good at all! to recap, if we lay a horse (to lose), we will win our stake if it does indeed lose but we lose our stake times the horses odds if it wins. obviously, almost any horse is more likely to lose than win and it is this irrefutable fact that makes laying look like a sure winner. so, what about the comparison with a bookmaker? bookmakers do not lay a single horse they lay all the horses in the race and the odds are calculated and continuously adjusted so that the income from the losing horses always exceeds the payout on the winners. ok, you may ask, why dont we also lay them all? two reasons; firstly, the time involved to place the lay on each horse means that the odds will have changed by the time we manage to do them all and, secondly, the odds given on betting exchanges for the less fancied horses are extremely high usually over 100.00 and often as much as 1000. this is different from the standard bookmakers odds and reflected the fact that no savvy punter wants to back these donkeys. ive often seen very high odds horses win. freak events happen. imagine your 1000 horse winning and having to pay out 10,000. in fact, its extremely unlikely youd have enough money in your account to allow lays on all the outsiders. for the sake of consistency, i will give all examples with a 10 stake it could just as easily be anything over 2 (the minimum bet on the betfair exchange) or 10 or 100. betting exchange like betfair are appealing because they offer higher than normal odds. this is not good news if you want to lay horses because the higher the odds, the less chance you have of making a profit. yet betting exchanges are the only place we can lay horses. the truth is that the best advantage betfair gives you is extra high odds on outsiders (around 20.0) and so the most profit would be had backing long odds outsiders, rather than laying! for this reason, many people advocate laying favourites simply because of their low odds and low payout if they win. for example, on a 1.80 favourite, youd only have to pay out 8.00 should it win yet you stand to make 10 should it lose. this seems to be a sure profit but youll be paying out very often and the only way to make decent money would be to use large stakes and hope you didnt get a run of several winners in a row as would surely eventually happen. in any case, you should realise that copying easy advice is not a way to make money! one of the more popular laying systems on sale suggests laying false favourites which actually turns out to mean most tipped favourite in any race in which any tipster has also recommended any other horse. not really a false favourite at all and, in the short time i tested it, the system steadily lost money. when i pointed this out to the author of the best-known version of this system on sale, he suggested that i might like to back the horses instead of lay them! nevertheless, i was sure that there must be money to be made in laying horses. i even checked the many lay tipping service success rate statistics and very few make any profit. some will actually make you large losses. the daily donkey is a consistent money-maker but youd have to lay around 50 horses a day if you want to use their tips! checking the website in between typing this, i see that today they sent out 54 donkeys and 10 of them won. i cant be bothered to work out the average odds but they certainly look to be greater than the 6.4 required to break even. contrast that with my lays on a typical day. i aim to lay around five horses if i can find that many suitable races and my success rate averages five out of six with average odds of 4.00. this is enough to make a decent profit but with my recovery betting produces very high profits. at just 20 a time, this method alone can bring in a substantial income with no risk of big losses. in fact, i never have a loss these days. before i refined my technique, i once laid six horses in a row all at double figure odds and all six won - losing my entire betting capital in a few hours. if i'd bet an accumulator on those six winning, i'd have made about 3,000,000 for a 1 bet! that's a hard luck story... the first thing you need to do if you want to lay horses is to sign up with a betting exchange and the biggest and best is undoubtedly betfair at www.betfair.com . unfortunately, us citizens cannot use betfair. betfair is like an ordinary online bookmaker except that members of the public act as the bookmaker and accept bets from the other people who are betting in the normal way. these people are accepting the bets in the way i described above, so they are laying bets on everything from football to climate change. when it comes to horse racing, we have anything from four to twenty odd players but there will rarely be more than three or four in with any chance of actually winning. usually, only two horses (generally the 1 st and 2 nd favourites) are likely to win. many people place bet or bet each way to get reduced winnings if the horse is placed, which means that it comes 1 st , 2 nd or, with a normal number of runners, 3 rd . the odds given are usually one quarter so you get very little profit unless the odds are vastly greater than those of most favourites! it is called each way because you actually place two bets, one for a win and another to cover 2 nd and 3 rd places. betfair have a much better system, simply called the place market where bets are made just on the one action of coming 1 st , 2 nd or 3 rd . smaller races just payout on the first two. all this is incidental to laying, except if you ever want to try laying in the place market. the only advantage is that the odds are much lower around 3.00 for non favourites but, of course, any horse stands much more chance of being placed than it does of actually winning. ive tried laying in the place market and it seems to be successful until you hit a poor run and its far too eas
